Special week of wellness events at the Geauga County Board of Mental Health and Recovery Services this September

The behavioral health workforce enjoyed a special week of wellness events at the Geauga County Board of Mental Health and Recovery Services this September, held in appreciation of their tireless efforts and dedication to the community. Staff from behavioral health agencies and partner organizations across Geauga County took part in activities that promoted self-care—the very practice they encourage in the individuals and families they serve.

The week kicked off with a drum circle led by Jared Hammond, a Licensed Music Therapist from Ravenwood Health. “Humans are inherently rhythmic beings, which makes drumming an excellent tool to regulate our emotions, exercise our bodies, and just have a little fun,” Hammond shared. Drumming is regularly used at Ravenwood Health as a therapeutic tool for both children and staff, with a variety of drums and percussion instruments that appeal to all ages.

To round out the week, the Board partnered with Freia Ramsey, owner of Taproot Yoga of Chardon, to offer activities such as chair yoga, mindfulness meditation, and the calming sounds of a sound bath—known to help regulate the nervous system and reduce stress. A workday wellness session also guided participants through mindful movement and breathwork, designed to restore the body’s natural energy and promote deep relaxation.

Christine Lakomiak, Executive Director of the Geauga County Board of Mental Health and Recovery Services, shared that the Board accessed a grant from the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) to fund the events. “We are grateful to Director LeeAnne Cornyn and her team at OhioMHAS. Over a dozen behavioral health agencies and community partners across Geauga County are the helping hands of our community, working tirelessly to support individuals and families on their recovery journey. This week of wellness is a small token of our appreciation—letting them know they are valued, and that we care about their well-being just as they care for others,” Lakomiak said.
