Substance Use Support for Children and Teens

In 2020, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health estimated that youth aged 12-17 drank alcohol in the prior month, and 13.8 percent of youth aged 12-17 used illicit drugs in the previous year.

The need for youth-focused prevention and treatment has never been greater.

The Geauga County Board of MH & RS works with partners throughout our continuum of care to ensure that children and youth have access to appropriate prevention messaging and programming, and that treatment and support for families experiencing youth substance use are available when they need it most.

Our Strategy

Prevention and Early Intervention

  • Education programs in schools, youth centers, and faith-based organizations that teach coping skills, healthy decision-making, and resilience.

Accessible Treatment and Support Services

  • Youth-specific treatment programs that are developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed, and family-centered.
  • Integrated mental health and substance use services, since many children struggle with both.
  • School-based Therapeutic Behavioral Support (TBS) workers who can provide ongoing support without stigma.

Family and Caregiver Support

  • Family First Council removes barriers through prevention, early intervention, and the provision of services to support the entire family.
  • Peer support networks where families can share experiences and resources.
  • Respite and case management to help families navigate complex systems.

Safe and Supportive Environments

  • Mentorship programs through Torchlight Youth Mentoring Alliance that connect youth with caring adults who model healthy lifestyles.

Policy and Systems-Level Supports

  • Partnerships among schools, healthcare, law enforcement, and community organizations to create coordinated responses.
  • Diversion programs to keep youth out of the justice system and connected to treatment instead.
  • Funding for prevention and youth treatment programs, ensuring equity in access for all families.

Reducing Stigma

  • Training for teachers, police, and community leaders on how to respond with compassion and support rather than punishment.
