Support Group for Youth

WomenSafe is starting an eight-week support group for female and male youth, ages 7-10, that have experienced or witnessed the trauma of domestic violence in their home.

The next free session is scheduled to begin in January and will be held on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Participants may have witnessed emotional, physical, verbal, sexual and/or financial abuse and it is not necessary to have used other WomenSafe services to participate, organizers said.

“It is natural for a young adult to feel a bit uneasy about going to a support group,” said Phyllis Henschel, a facilitator and counselor. “After a few sessions, teens find that the group allows them to reach out to other survivors and realize they are not alone.”

WomenSafe officials noted the sooner children are engaged in services and open discussion, there is an increased likelihood that the cycle of violence will cease.

Those who would like more information or to register for the trauma support group for teens, should call Phyllis at
440-286-7154 ext. 229. Those who are in crisis and in need of immediate support call COPEline 24-hours a day at
888-285-5665.

WomenSafe’s mission is to provide emergency shelter and support services for victims of domestic violence throughout Northeast Ohio.
