What is WomenSafe?

WomenSafe, Inc. the Green House provides emergency shelter and support services for survivors of domestic violence in Northeast Ohio. WomenSafe is a non-profit organization that offers 24-hour crisis management, shelter, advocacy, information, counseling, therapy, education, referrals and support to survivors of domestic violence.

The mission of WomenSafe is to provide emergency shelter and support services to survivors of domestic violence throughout northeast Ohio

In order to serve this mission, WomenSafe Inc., the Green House is proud to offer the following services, free of charge:

Services/Program Descriptions

Emergency Shelter - WomenSafe offers shelter to survivors of domestic violence throughout northeastern Ohio. The shelter is a safe comforting environment where victims begin to heal, receive counseling, consider alternatives and develop goals for an abuse-free life. All basic necessities are provided to residents. While at the shelter, case management is provided to assist survivors with individual goals through support, education and an explanation of community resources.

COPEline (1-888-285-5665) - by calling this 24-hour support and crisis management hotline, victims of domestic violence receive support, access to shelter and services as well as information and referrals to community resources. The hotline is also recommended for friends and family who need more information about domestic violence, WomenSafe services and how to help a person in need.

Community Support Program - Domestic violence professionals assist clients in developing and accomplishing personal goals and life skills. Clients are linked to community resources based on their individual goals and needs.

Diagnostic Assessment - Licensed mental health professionals complete assessments and use the information to determine the needs, strengths, and services to be provided to each client

Outreach Counseling - Clinical staff provide individual counseling in a secure confidential location to any person victimized by domestic violence. Counselors aid survivors in the exploration of new alternatives for living. Counseling is offered to both residents and nonresidents of the shelter.

Peer Support Group - A 10 week support group, facilitated by a licensed mental health professional, provides victims of domestic violence a safe place to gain strength and support from others in similar situations. The sessions are designed to recognize, express, and accept feelings related to experiencing an abusive relationship as well as provided information about domestic violence.

Art Therapy - Art therapy provides a non-threatening approach to process feelings and issues surrounding family violence. Art allows survivors to express a range of emotions through creative self-expression. The art therapist offers this service to adults and children ages five and older.

Court Advocacy - Court advocates accompanying survivors of domestic violence through the court process explaining legal entitlement and implications of legal proceedings. Advocates provide crisis intervention and emotional support as victims seek assistance from the judicial system.

Hospital Advocacy - Face-to-face support and crisis intervention is available to hospital patients who have experienced domestic violence.

Relocation Assistance - Any client who uses WomenSafe services is offered household items to assist in establishing and maintaining independent living.

Reestablishment Services - After addressing the immediate needs of clients, WomenSafe staff continues to provide survivors with long-term support in living life free from violence.

Community Education and Training - To build community awareness, WomenSafe offers presentations to the general public, schools, businesses, agencies, churches and senior and youth organizations learn about abuse-free dating, dynamics of domestic violence, healthy relationships and dating violence date rape, elder abuse, effects of domestic violence of children, how to access services, asses domestic violence and how to you can help someone who is being abused. WomenSafe also provides comprehensive training for task force members, prosecutors, judges, physicians, nurses, social service providers, teachers, day care providers, therapists, mental health personnel, assisted living aids, and social workers.

CARF announced in June 2006 that WomenSafe has been accredited for a period of three years for its Case Management/Services Coordination: Mental Health (Adults), Case Management/Services Coordination: Mental Health (Children and Adolescents), Outpatient Treatment: Mental Health (Adults), and Outpatient Treatment: Mental Health (Children and Adolescents) programs. An organization receiving a Three-Year Accreditation outcome has put itself thorough a rigorous peer review process and has demonstrated to a team of surveyors during an on-site visit that its programs and services are of the highest quality, measurable and accountable.

Volunteers Needed WomenSafe is always in need of volunteers to assist with various projects within the agency. We can customize a volunteer opportunity to meet your needs. In-kind donations include: household items, cleaning supplies, personal hygiene products, prepaid gas and phone cards and office supplies. . In State Fiscal Year 2007:

  • WomenSafe provided 1400 emergency shelter days. Over 110 adults and children were reassured that they would have a safe nights sleep while working on plans for the future.
  • Ninety two percent of clients who resided in shelter felt the staff helped them access the services they needed from the community.
  • Ninety one percent of people served felt less alone since working with WomenSafe.
  • Nearly 1400 people called WomenSafe - hotline and received crisis management and support.
  • Over 2500 children, adults and elderly community members were educated on WomenSafe services, intimate partner violence, recognizing unhealthy relationships and how to help someone in need.
  • One hundred percent of surveyed clients felt counseling was beneficial to them.
  • Eighty percent of clients felt they knew more about their legal rights since working with WomenSafe.
  • Ninety five percent of people who resided in the emergency shelter left to homes free from violence either to new independent living or to live with family members.

* WomenSafe's 130 volunteers committed to nearly 5000 hours of service. From fundraising to staffing our 24-hour crisis hotline, to assisting at shelter, to sorting donations, our volunteers help in a variety of ways.
