Talking Points - "Think Outside
the Stigma"
For Ohio's Boards and Providers
* A new message campaign, entitled, "Think
Outside the Stigma" unveiled to the Ohio legislature on October
30th, 2007 as part of the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction
Services' Legislative Day.
- Campaign has four accompanying message points.
The four points are:
- Alcohol and other drug addictions and mental
illnesses are brain diseases.
- Alcohol and other drug addictions and mental
illnesses can affect anyone.
- Alcohol and other drug addictions and mental
illnesses are treatable.
- Individuals with brain diseases should
not be discriminated against.
- A Stigma Reduction Committee spearheaded by
the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services created
the"Think Outside the Stigma" tagline.
- Tagline and four message points tested by more
than 200 focus group participants in September 2007. Participants
agreed with tagline/messages and chose logo.
- Message campaign being rolled out over the
next few years to inform the public about the financial, emotional
and physical problems associated with addiction. Currently,
the state is in the process of building a statewide marketing
campaign for the "Think Outside the Stigma" message.
- Stigma forces thousands of Ohioans to sit in
silence inflicted with their disease afraid to seek treatment
and obtain available services they deserve.
- Stigma reduction= Quicker treatment for individuals
to have a full and productive life.
- Treatment works, people recover, and Ohioans
are well worth the investment.
- Addiction is a brain disease. (Source: National

- In 2005, an estimated 228,000 individuals needed,
but did not receive treatment in Ohio for illicit drugs. In
that same year, an estimated 652,000 individuals needed, but
did not receive treatment in Ohio for alcohol abuse. (Source:

- For every dollar spent on prevention in Ohio,
there is an economic savings of $7 by reducing lost productivity,
crime, child abuse/neglect and homelessness. (Source: Ohio Department

- Addiction and mental health disorders account
for more than one-fifth of all lost days of productive life.

- Approximately, 54 million Americans suffer
from mental illnesses and 26 million from addictions with a
significant number living with co-occurring mental illnesses
