On July 1, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services unveiled the new website: www.healthcare.gov. This site provides consumers with both public and private health coverage options and helps them take control of their health care by connecting them to new information and resources that will help them access quality, affordable health care coverage. Starting in October, the website will also provide price estimates for the different health care plans. Additionally, the new site provides information related to the new health care legislation. As you may be aware, the new federal health care reform law requires states to set up a temporary health insurance program – or “high?risk pool” – for uninsured people with preexisting health conditions, including several mental illnesses. This program will last until 2014, when full federal reforms will take effect. Ohio has designated Medical Mutual of Ohio as the non?profit entity to administer the high risk pool program for the state. We need your help in getting the word out to eligible Ohioans about this important program. Go to www.ohiohighriskpool.com. This is where information is available about the application that is available on August 1, 2010 with coverage starting on September 1, 2010 and running through 2014. There is eligibility criteria that has to be met. People cannot be eligible for Medicare, CHIP, Medicaid or an employer sponsored plan. Pre existing conditions include but aren’t limited to Asthma, COPD, Chronic pain conditions, coronary artery disease, depression, diabetes, heart failure, pregnancy. It is important to note that there are only sufficient funds to cover approximately 5,500 Ohioans and it is estimated that five times as many people are eligible. This means that applications will be taken on a first come, first served basis.
