Ravenwood 13th Annual Art Show " Colors of the Inner Mind"

What is Art Therapy?

According to Heather Denning, Art Therapist at Ravenwood Mental Health Center, “Art Therapy offers an alternative to verbal expression. With feelings or emotional pain sometimes words alone cannot express that. It provides an insight to oneself and rebuilds self-esteem after the trauma of mental illness.”

“The artwork shows the individuality and strength of the artist outside the label of their mental illness.”

Unlike an art class, art therapy helps a person express their thoughts, emotions and pain through the use of different art materials.

To promote “May is Mental Health Month”, Ravenwood Mental Health Center’s Adult Partial Hospitalization Program hosted it’s 13th Annual Client Art Show on May 17th. The theme for this year’s show was “Colors of the Inner Mind”. Those that attended the show gained a better understanding of mental health issues and the strengths and struggles of the artists. The event was successful and many clients were able to display and sell their individual artwork.

Most of the artwork on display was created during art therapy groups provided at Ravenwood Mental Health Center.

For more information about the art therapy program contact Heather Denning at (440) 286-1631, ext. 206.
