Ohio Women's Network,
Inc.
OWN has 75 programs in more than
40 Ohio counties.
OWN is an affiliate of the Ohio
Department of Alcohol & Drug Addiction Services.
Mission Statement: The Ohio Women's Network is a
diverse group of professionals providing leadership in the provision
of women's gender specific and gender competent alcohol, tobacco
and other drug programming for women, whose mission is to strengthen
collaboration and coordination among the various programs providing
services to women and children; to develop and disseminate "best
practices" among such programs; to improve identification and
referral of substance abusing women by human services agencies;
to assure women's access to clinically appropriate prevention and
treatment and to increase awareness of women's substance abuse and
effective treatment technologies.
Vision Statement: To enhance the integrity of women's
alcohol, tobacco and other drug treatment, intervention, prevention,
and recovery programs within a system that maintains accountability
and value.
Success: Collectively, the OWN participants, through
their programs, have been successful in supporting women in restoring
their lives and the lives of their children for over 25 years and
have saved tax payers millions of dollars EACH year.
Addressing Stigma Reduction: Individuals in society
often think of alcohol and other drug addictions in terms of their
personal experience, that is, they may be biased by their experience
with someone they know who is NOT getting the help they need.
There is also much media attention given to the
daily effects of rampant drug use and the violence and criminal
acts committed. What society-at-large is NOT exposed to are the
THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of people who are recovering from their
alcoholism, and/or addictions and have been doing so for decades.
Without the services of OWN, each (already overburdened)
public system would be seriously impacted negatively. For example,
the state's county jails, state and federal prisons, the foster
care system, babies born addicted to substances with birth defects
requiring immediate and life time care and special education, emergency
room costs ( from injuries, violence, child abuse, long term health
neglect, overdoses), workforce reduction, and homelessness.
You may never know when you're talking
with someone in long term recovery. Thousands of women served by
the Ohio Women's Network Programs over the past 25 plus years are
highly productive career people in every profession imaginable.
They are doctors, salesclerks, soccer moms, waitresses, truck drivers,
and legislators, executive directors, probation officers, and artists.
They are contributing tax payers and voters. They don't stand out
in a crowd because they look just like you and me.
